NVFC Releases 2010 Trade Show Schedule
Visit the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC) this year at one of ten fire service trade shows across the country. The NVFC will be bringing its interactive Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program exhibit booth to six state conferences and will feature all of the NVFC’s programs at four national shows in 2010. Save the Date: National Firefighter Health Week is August 16-20
Mark your calendars for the National Volunteer Fire Council’s (NVFC) fourth annual National Firefighter Health Week, which will take place August 16-20. Created through the NVFC’s ground-breaking Heart-Healthy Firefighter Program, National Firefighter Health Week is a week-long initiative to educate both the fire service and the public about health and wellness issues of particular concern to fire and emergency service personnel. Make Plans Now for American Heart Month
Cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and stroke, is the number one cause of death in America. In fact, heart disease causes about 29 percent of all U.S. deaths. The emergency services are not immune to this tragic statistic. Heart disease remains the number one cause of on-duty firefighter fatalities, with about half of all line-of-duty deaths each year attributed to heart attacks. Read full article.

NVFC, Pfizer to Offer New Smoking Cessation Resources
Smoking cessation is a key component of leading a heart-healthy lifestyle. With heart attack the leading cause of firefighter deaths, and other illnesses such as lung cancer, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis significant threats to smokers and those exposed to second-hand smoke, helping firefighters lead a smoke-free life is a critical component to keeping first responders safe and healthy. Heart-Healthy Firefighter January Challenge: All Year Long Resolutions
The holiday season has come to an end, and a new year has begun. Membership at gyms will increase; people will go out to buy their new workout gear, stop eating dessert, and make efforts to quit smoking…again. View challenge.
Recipe: Turkey Stew

Try this hearty stew with a green salad and whole wheat dinner roll for a well-rounded meal. For a twist, use plantains or corn instead of potatoes or add more vegetables to taste.
